OK murder mystery that gets better as it goes, with ex-cop Lawrence Tierney and his girlfriend assistant Priscilla Lane scouring the immoral jungle of a meatpacking plant. Meat Is Murder resonances are faint but inevitable. You know you're an optometrist facing a rough day if Lawrence Tierney walks in without an appointment. Speedy hourlong 'B' with nice postwar LA location footage; also Priscilla Lane gets to do some funny stuff (with her voice alone, a slightly surreal phonograph scene). Didn't spot any trademarks of 23-year-old co-story-creator Robert Altman unless a felon being "extradited to Kansas City" counts. Love love love the scenes where Priscilla Lane gets to demonstrate her aplomb at slipping in and out of personas to help get information for the case. The scene in the eye doctor's office is my favorite. Also adore the bit where she records vital info on records for Tierney to listen to later so she could get the file back to the station. Super early Richard Fleischer joint delivers the goods.

Un momento luminoso en una película ágil pero opaca. Not high are, but entertaining and somewhat suspenseful. Priscilla Lane is such a doll! Kind of wacky plot that makes this one memorable. A shame this was Lane's final screen appearance--she might've proved an interesting presence in subsequent noirs during the 50s. As Tierney rushes from scene to scene, each one a compact storytelling module shaped by a deft camera, he encounters a slew of amusing characters. You have the factory worker who explains how to make corned beef; the girl in the arcade who's flirting with some sailors; the boat repairman who talks about his late brother. Each one is another little pin in the film's hastily sketched map of Los Angeles. Another little reason to watch a breezy RKO programmer before catching the bus to work. Lawrence Tierney's sacked cop is set up as the bodyguard of a meat packing family with a few dirty secrets. Tierney might be great in Reservoir Dogs and even better in Seinfeld but he is not a particularly engaging lead and the movie actually feels a little baggy at times despite the 62 minute run time. Priscilla Lane's female lead is more interesting and the movie has some nice gritty dialogue (mainly in the early scenes before it gets bogged down in who dunnit plot) but I can't say I really got a lot from it.
This thing moves fast and the dialogue and plot info comes out at a pretty rapid pace. There are some fun noir staples like a frame job, a fall guy and a body in a car… A quick bit of nonsense. Lawrence Tierney is great as a frightening playing the romantic lead. Not really acting there. The movie is just fine. Not especially great, but fine. The end is a bit silly. It's no classic, for sure. It's a fun watch though. LA cop Mike Carter (Lawrence Tierney) is suspended for taking the law into his own hands which bungles an operation, and is then immediately fired for decking his boss. Shortly thereafter, he's hired to be the bodyguard for Gene Dyson, matriarch of a meat packing business. Twists, turns, murder, oh my. Lawrence Tierney turns this into a slightly better than average noir-ish film. Priscilla Lane, as Doris Brewster, gives an energetic performance as Mike's love interest and 'investigative' assistant. Character actor Steve Brodie has a small but prominent role.
